A local bar. Stephen Callaway sits alone at a table absent mindedly stirring his drink with a bright green straw as he watches a shadow on the other side of the bar walk to the stage. An emcee off stage announces the singer as she steps onto the stage. PA System needs fixed as a wordless mumble comes out he speakers. Stephen is up on his feet clapping enthusiastically.
A musical intro for ‘Super Trooper’ by Abba begins and the singer begins to sing. A screen in front of her and a larger one behind reads the words she sings. Yes it’s Karaoke night. As singers go she’s not bad. The crowd don’t mind, they sing along. It’s Abba though. Stephen claps along and joins in on the chorus. At the end of the song some applaud as she takes a small bow before heading through the crowd. As she gets closer to Stephen he holds her in a hug.
Stephen
“You did good Valey. Crowd was rockin’.”
Valerie
“I need a drink.”
Stephen hands her his cola. She necks it.
Stephen
“I’ll get another round in.”
He heads through the crowd to the bar. A barman in his mid fifties with a towel on his shoulder turns to serve him.
Stephen
“A cola and beer. Bottle please.”
The barman hands over the drinks as Stephen hands over money.
Barman
“I know you don’t I?”
Stephen
“I was here earlier, I had the same drink order.”
Barman
“It’s not that.”
The barman slaps himself with his towel.
Barman
“What was it, what was it…THAT’S who you are.”
He’s pointing at Stephen.
Barman
“You’re that wrestler. Callawheasy!”
Stephen
“Callaway.”
Barman
“Whatever. I watch it with my son. He’s nineteen and training to be a wrestler. Any advice?”
Stephen
“Tell him to never let his defeats hold him down. His losses are just natures way of saying ‘you’re going the wrong way’. If you can’t win the World Title in a cage match, beat a former champion and become number one contender. If you can’t be the number one contender, win a place in a tournament. Match wins will get you noticed, but he’ll soon find out that you can still look good losing matches.
I tell you what. I’ll be in Gold’s on Tuesday, send him down. I’ll have a look at him see what he can do.”
Barman
“Will do. How’re you set for Paul Saint?”
Stephen
“I’ve beaten him before but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna lie down and let me do it again. This time he’ll be out looking to avenge the loss. I need to be better than him. I want to be back in the main event of the super-cards, I can’t do that if I lose.”
At this point Valerie comes over.
Valerie
“Where the fuck’s my drink?”
He hands over a bud.
Valerie
“You’re on next.”
They turn and watch a woman in her late forties tunelessly wailing ‘Without you’ by Mariah Carey. She finishes. The crowd applaud. Probably glad it’s finished. A guitar riff to begin ‘Simply the Best’ by Tina Turner plays and Stephen jogs through the crowd to the stage where (yet again) the PA System mumbles his name.
Just as he steps onto the stage we fade to black.
