The scene opens to a familiar setting, but much has changed. The once towering decrepit church is now nothing more than burned wood and piles of ash. Scorched bases of wooden pews line the grime covered floor. The once great statuaries are now charred black. Bits of stained window can be found in small heaps of soot. Only one thing remains standing, the metal candle stand. It is singed dark, covered in ash and dust. It has been picked up from its fallen position by Jason Phoenix, his shoes and hands covered in dark ash. The stand was cleared of candles the last time Phoenix was here, so instead his zippo lighter sits in the center of the stand with a flame burning. His deep blue eyes do not leave
the small spark.
Why? Why can’t I beat this man? I have fought Josh Eagles a countless number of times and nothing I do seems to work! I have trained hard since I came to Pride and have beaten many men, but Eagles…he just won’t go down. From the beginning of my time here at Pride I was given a rival. He was my first battle, my first loss, but also my first teacher. He taught me what it took to make it here in Pride. Every single time I fight him, every single loss…makes me stronger. Strong to a point that I’d never have thought I could reach. But still, even at my strongest, my best, he defeated me. I’ve been losing a lot recently…but not much has changed. Have others just become stronger while I stay the same? That can’t be, I have trained my ass off over the last few weeks. I just don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve beaten the best, but I can’t beat Eagles.
Phoenix reaches out to the sitting lighter and closes it, extinguishing the flame.
Speaking of kings, I’ve got to focus on my new opponent; Eddie Nash, the self-proclaimed King of the Road. This man despises me. He has stated many times that I did not deserve the title shots I received. Maybe he was right, but what makes him decide? He has never fought me; he doesn’t know what I am capable of. The only two that decide my fate are King Sterling and King Noble, not some motorcycle maniac who has probably never seen me in action.
Phoenix picks his zippo up off of the table and starts to click the lighter on and off. He leaves the small metal stand and begins to walk around the devastated church, kicking up soot with every step. As he walks around he lights any piece of scrap wood or fabric he can find that has not already become the dinner of his previous fire. He creates a small trail of flame behind him. Suddenly, a low rumble of thunder reaches his ears. He looks up to see dark clouds beginning to cover the bright moon. He becomes shrouded in shadow, the only light coming from his tiny sparks.
And what is this nonsense? Mother Nature; you weren’t invited to my party. Most people say you’re great, but I don’t believe that. All you do is cause pain; earthquakes, tornadoes, bolts of lightning. Right when I’m at my lowest, you come and kick me down lower, into the pits of Hell. You cause darkness and torture.
A drop of rain falls onto Phoenix’s face.
And what is this now, water? You even send me my enemy? Why? Are you trying to take away my only friends?
A few more drops start to fall as the rain begins to pick up. Phoenix frantically looks around as his small flames begin to dowse. He starts running, trying to save his little creations. He begins screaming at the sky.
There is no other reason for this but pure torture! You are just like all the others, trying to take away anything little thing that will make me happy! You are just like Sterling, using me as your pawn to get a sick laugh!
Phoenix doesn’t know what to do as his miniscule flames begin to go out. He runs trying to protect them, but realizes that he has lost this battle. A small tear wells in his eye. Defeated and soaking wet, he turns to face the metal stand. He notices something underneath it, and walks closer. As he draws nearer he realizes that a small flame has endured the rain, protected by the candle stand. Ecstatic, he runs over to the stand and sits by it, surrounding the tiny flame with his hands, protecting his friend.
Hello little friend. I thought I lost you. But you survived the torture that all of your brothers perished through. You survived. And just like you, I will survive. I will keep fighting and becoming stronger. The Crimson Knight will defeat The King of the Road.
The scene fades as Jason Phoenix sits with his flame, rain still pouring down on him, ready to defeat Eddie Nash.
