The scene slowly comes into focus outside a gym in Cookeville. Alex Avice is waiting just outside the entrance, camera crew in tow. Trying not to freeze in this particularly frigid morning, Avice is bundled up with a very large peacoat and a quite bulky scarf. Avice kicks at the snow and sighs, his breath vaporizing in the cold morning air. Finally, after freezing outside for a few minutes, we see Chris Williams open the front door to leave the gym. He is caught somewhat off-guard by Avice, who excitedly jumps toward him, microphone in hand….
Avice:
Chris! What took you so long to get out here!
Taken aback by what seems to be a total stranger with a camera, Williams responds in the politest way he knows…
Williams:
Um… who are you?
Avice:
Alex Avice, Kingdom of Pride’s official backstage correspondent! And YOU sir, are somebody that takes ENTIRELY too long to work out. We’ve been standing out here for at least an hour waiting for you.
Williams:
You could have waited inside… you only have to pay if you enter the gym, dude. Lobby’s free.
Avice’s frozen cheeks turn a deeper shade of red, as Williams opens the front door for the crew to enter and complete the impromptu interview. The heater mounted on the wall rumbles, as Avice breathes a deep sigh of relief.
Avice:
So Chris, the reason I came down here was to get your gut-reaction to your first week in this fine company, the Kingdom of Pride. Your thoughts – straight from the heart. This will also be your very first interview in the company, and I was hoping you would oblige.
Williams:
Fair enough, shoot.
For the first time all morning, Avice breaks out into a wide smile, excited to interview the new young star.
Avice:
Fantastic! So, uh… I guess we’ll just get started! First off, at last week’s Oblivion, you called out Stephen Callaway, a man who pulls double duty, wrestling in both UWL and Pride. He wasted no time at all in answering your question – by saying that he wouldn’t be forced into choosing sides at all. How would you respond to him?
As the camera pans back to Chris, he is staring at the ground, smirking. He tilts his head toward the camera and answers…
Williams:
Alex, you basically said it all in your question. Callaway answered by not answering at all. I’m not going to force him to choose a side right now, but do I believe for a second that he WON’T, in the end, choose a side? Not at all. Eventually, Callaway will HAVE to choose. When two sides are at war, you simply cannot ride the fence and play both sides of the coin. If you try, you’ll be cast out from both, it’s that simple. I just want to know that we’re playing for the same team, Stephen. If we are, then we don’t have a problem. However, if you try to double-cross this company or anyone in it, I will make it my personal responsibility to give you your comeuppance. Now, I know I’m new to Pride, and I’m not going to be one to say that I’m the sheriff in town, but I swear I will tear you apart if you mess with the Kingdom.
Williams pauses for a moment, before continuing.
Williams:
And that pretty much goes for every single person in the UWL, or anyone, anywhere, that even thinks about messing with Pride. I am willing to go to any lengths to defend this company from all of your bullshit, and I will absolutely stop at nothing to tear you all down. And I can guarantee that I’m not the only one. If you mess with us, you better be ready.
Avice:
And while we’re on the subject of being ready, what are you expecting from your first match in a Pride ring, against none other than Obscene?
Williams:
Well straight up, Obscene is one of the more unpredictable wrestlers in the Kingdom of Pride right now. Noble absolutely pushed his back against a wall a few weeks back with that ultimatum. I mean, he basically said “Impress me or you’re fired.” A man with his back up against something that intense is willing to do anything to make a statement. Now, I don’t at all want to put somebody out of a job, but I damn sure don’t want to be the reason Obscene keeps his. I have no intention of letting him make an example of me, let that be known. Looking at the match-up, I definitely have the size advantage over him, so I’m hoping to work in my game and keep him in check. I’ve got about 5 inches and 50 pounds on the guy. Normally, not even close to a fair fight, but against a man like Obscene, anything can happen. He’s cut down big dudes twice his size, and I will not get complacent at any point in the match until my arm is raised. Size means nothing when he’s got nothing to lose.
Avice:
Nothing to lose?
Williams:
Coming off of a conversation like that with Noble? I absolutely think he has nothing to lose. I mean think about it, he just got told ”Win or you’re fired.” If you lose to a rookie in his absolute DEBUT match, how does that look? I’m trying to be ready for anything that he can throw at me. The guy is ALREADY emotionally unstable, so I can only imagine where his psyche is at right now. I’m expecting cheating, I’m expecting weapons, I’m trying to expect anything that could pop into his brain at any time. I HAVE to stay 3 steps ahead, or I’ll be run over. Pride may be an indy fed, but not one guy in here is a joke. Obscene is no exception.
Avice:
It sounds almost as though you’re preparing for a loss. I thi-
Williams cuts him off mid-sentence, fired up about Avice’s last comment.
Williams:
You’re insane if you think I’m ready to lose this match. Now, I may think Obscene is a great competitor, but I will win. Period. There is no way around it, and I will not be remotely happy with any other outcome, Avice.
Avice:
Fair enough, Chris. So, one last question, what is in this for you? What do you want from your time in Kingdom of Pride?
Williams:
Wow, that’s a loaded question. I guess the first thing would be that I want to stop this UWL invasion. For Pride to truly grow into the federation that I believe it will become, we need to be able to stop UWL once and for all. I want to be one of the reasons that it happens.
Second, respect. Respect is earned, and I intend to do just that. I hope in time, that I can be one of the leaders of that locker room, a voice that commands respect. You don’t have to like me, but I’ll definitely earn that respect.
Lastly, the Valiant Championship. A far away thought now, yes. Right now, I may not even be in the same league as guys like Eagles or Kane, but I fully intend on fighting my way up the ladder and proving I belong. One day, I will become the Valiant Champion.
Avice:
Chris, those are some very strong words for someone that has not yet debuted inside a Pride ring. How can you be so sure that you’ll just ride into KoP and sway the tide of the war with UWL? For that matter, what makes you think you’ll even be able to survive a single match with a man like Obscene?
Williams:
It’s all preparation, Alex. I know deep in my heart, that there isn’t a single wrestler in the business that will put in the kind of work I do outside of that ring. I knew coming into this line of work that I’m simply not the most physically gifted guy for this job. I’m too tall, too lanky, and I don’t have just quite enough muscle on my frame to fit the bill. But I make up for all of that ten times over in heart. I will work harder, faster than anyone else. I will put in more time studying up match film to get an edge over my opponent than anyone else. I do it all because of one single promise that I made to my father over six years ago. A promise that I will become a champion, the greatest champion that this business has ever witnessed. It’s because of that promise that I will never give up. I will not be out-hustled. I will not be over-matched or under-prepared. I will NOT. BACK. DOWN!
The scene fades out as Williams stares deep into the camera.
