Already his career had been up and down. He had won his opening contest in an impressive fashion only to fight his heart out and lose in his second match. This is not something that you could see in the smile of our young Jamaican friend who is on the floor and doing push ups wearing his regular sports attire. His hair is back and he looks relaxed even though his clothes are dirty and his face is dripping with sweat. After a moment he stands up and throws an interesting looking kick and then starts doing some jumping jacks. A couple of wrestlers from the local indy circuit are looking at him with disgust.
Indy Wrestler #1: Hey Douch-ne! Tell me how it's fair that a bum like you got a contract when hard working people like us have gotten the shaft.
Dushane stops doing jumping jacks and looks over at the people who are addressing him and does nothing but merely shrugs.
Daevin: I guess they are trying to be diverse or they just like my personality. I don't know man I just sent in my resume and got a contract.
Indy Wrestler #1: Well you know what Douchbag, I don't think it's very fair!
The guy stands up and starts cracking his knuckles and walking toward Dushane.
Daevin: Well I'm sorry but that isn't a problem of mine. Maybe you should try and apply for more then just jobbing or maybe you should get some more training and you can get here to.
The second of the three stand up. He has bright red hair and he looks livid.
Indy Wrestler #2: More training? I've been doing this for three years and you've had a grand total of two matches with no training that anyone is aware of.
Dushane again just shrugs clearly not upset or offended by anything.
Daevin: I've had training of sorts just not any that count I suppose. I mean to say that none of it is official. I am just here because I've got a lot of things to prove to myself and to the world and I want to be something greater then just me, I want to be a symbol of unity.
Indy Wrestler #3: Maybe I'll unify my fist with your face, would that be symbol enough for you?
: Oh it will be symbol enough that I'll make sure you never work the indy circuit again!
The three guys turn towards the door and there stands Alex Avice looking at the situation with his arms crossed. Daevin smiles and puts his hand behind his head and the three mumble to each other and exit the room in fear of the threat.
Alex: Do you pick fights for a living Daevin? First you draw Ogre Lambert, then you have Esix Cordero getting pissed at you and now you're trying to piss off three different guys?
Daevin: Hey man I am a peace loving guy just getting caught in the wrong place in the wrong time.
Alex shakes his head and puts his hand on it laughing as it's impossible to take Daevin with anything but an ounce of serious. He was a happy guy, always smiling and had a spirit you just couldn't crush.
Alex: Well you have to be ready for your big match tonight then! If you were looking to make an impact and prove something this is your chance.
Daevin: Well I won't lie to ya Alex I am looking forward to this one. I've never been in a tag match and all I can hope is that these guys are good and I can learn a lot from them and maybe help my team win.
Alex looks ready to say something but then stops as it seems something might have dawned on him.
Alex: You do realize how big this match is don't you Daevin? I mean you know that Abel and Noble are two of the biggest stars in the Kingdom of Pride and Stephen Callaway is likely the best undercard star in history.
Daevin sits down mopping sweat from his brow and shrugs as he looks over at Alex.
Daevin: No disrespect intended to anyone but I never got to watch wrestling in America so I don't know who a lot of these guys are but if they really are as good as you say then I am excited to be apart of the match. I heard Adam Abel saying that I reminded him a lot of himself when he was younger and that I just needed to apply myself and that is an honor to me. I want to learn and I want to get better and I just take it one match at a time.
Alex: Would that explain why you have been badgering Esix Cordero?
Daevin gives a sly smile and looks up at Alex.
Daevin: I don't know a lot I have no training and Esix is a serious guy and he looks good when he is out there, I mean really good. It just makes sense to try and get him to teach me the ropes as well.
Alex: Right now you really should be focused on your match up as much as I think it's great you want to learn and all but this match up could make or break your career.
Daevin: No such creature Alex man. No matter what happens out there I'll be back week in and week out. I may not have gotten here on pure wrestling talent but I did get here on heart and the will to prove something.
Daevin stands up and starts doing jumping jacks again.
Alex: You really drum to your own beat don't you?
Daevin: Yes I do Alex, you see when you've been through what I've been through Alex you learn to live with anything. I mean look at me now I live pretty near on the street living paycheck to paycheck just to feed myself but I don't mind because when I get into the ring man, the rush is unlike anything I've ever felt before. It feels like I am conquoring everything from the past.
Alex: Are you serious? I thought we set you up in a hotel, I mean we give you the money for it.
Daevin: There are a lot of people in this place that are way worse off. Kids starving on the street that can use it a little more then I can, besides there is a shelter.
Alex sits down his hands on his head in shock.
Alex: You stay in a shelter, your a wrestler, and you have spirits that won't go down. You truly are a cut above the rest.
Daevin: It's why I never give up, Somebody can beat on your body and beat on your mind but they can't steal your heart or your beliefs and they can't make you change who you are. It's why I want to be good at this it's because it's something that I believe in it's something that I care about because it's me. That's why I can go out and I will not truly be beat.
Alex: But don't you want to win?
Daevin: Of course I do man! I want to team up with Abel and beat Stephen Callaway and Johnny Noble, I want to take my game to the next level and I am hoping I can do that. I promised that I would become something and that I would mean something and tonight I'll make a step in that direction.
Alex: Well there I have it I guess. But I have to know, what is this big secret, this thing you keep talking about that you need to prove.
Daevin: Really? I thought it was obvious. I'm gay man.
Alex looked shocked and Daevin slapped his hand onto Alex's shoulder and then walked out of the room.
Alex: Gay, Jamaican wrestler with no past experience? Only time will tell.
