The camera picks up trainers as they smack against the asphalt. The camera pans and we see Stephen and Valerie Callaway jogging side by side. Valerie suddenly quickens her pace and sprints on ahead. Stephen makes an obscure sound of protest. Valerie turns, looks at Stephen and laughs.
Valerie
“What’s the matter? Getting beaten by a girl? The speed you run at, that’s going to happen often.”
Stephen
“I’m not going to get beaten by a girl. I just thought we were out here for a jog. You’re the one running.”
Valerie wipes a hand over her sweaty forehead and down her top before leaning against a tree.
Valerie
“You usually are against man on woman violence. Why have you not been calling Kurt or Jeremy all week?”
Stephen takes a wipe from his pocket and wipes it across his face.
Stephen
“I heard a rumour. Don’t tell anyone this, but I heard that front office want someone to rely on. A champion to rest the company on his or her shoulders that they know will be able to balance it.”
Valerie
“The fuck are you talking about?”
Stephen
“All I’m saying is that I need to show that the company can look at me as someone who does what they want me to do. If that means that I fight a woman when they book me to then that’s what I’ll do. I want to be a champion in Pride. This morning before we left for this jog, Jay Nitro called me up to see how I was doing. He told me that he saw me as a future champion. A FUTURE champion. Now if my old boss could see it I have to show Kurt and I have to show Jeremy that I CAN be the champion they look for.”
He walks over toward the camera and grabs it. The picture blurs as he tosses it to Valerie. When picture settles, we see Stephen ‘Brock bouncing’ on the spot.
Stephen
“I want everyone in Pride to be seeing this and to be paying attention! I was told years ago by my parents about how violence toward women is wrong. WWE Rule number 23,522 states that there is to be no man on woman violence in their company. And YES! Under normal circumstances I would be badgering Kurt Noble and Jeremy Sterling from morning to night until I had another opponent. During the war that never was, I kept backing both companies. I would back them and I refused to be bought, controlled or forced to cross that line and break my ‘one rule’. But I can’t do that and then call them up and complain when I get a booking on a card. Kurt and Jeremy want a champion they can rely on, a champion to lead their company without question?
I am that man! For them I will wrestle a woman. For them I would wrestle A Zombie. This Sunday night, for them, I will do both. I am their knight in shining Bat armour. I am their champion. To prove this I’ve taken their Paul Saints and their Adam Unabels their would be champions and I sent them homeward to think again.
The Kingdom of Pride used to stand for just that, Pride. Since I came here the champion has been a bird brain, a Judas like traitor and the ‘human’ equivalent of Glenn ‘giggity’ Quagmire. To restore Pride in this place we need a champion that deserves and earns the respect of his peers. A champion who is embraced by the fans and a champion that we can all rely on and believe in. I like to think that is me. I like to think that I am the kind of champion that this company can get behind. The road to glory starts here! I’ll see zombie hot on Sunday and if they want me to send her back to the graveside, so be it. I’m Stephen Callaway and I ALWAYS have an angle! Always.”
He makes a gutting motion with his hand over his neck. Valerie switches the camera off and we go to black.
