The scene opens to find a familiar room; the room where a happy Luke Haven and his girlfriend Chloe were once unpacking their things, ready to start a new life. But there are drastic differences to this room today; there is no furniture, no appliances, nothing. Nothing but a lone clock on the wall, ticking away the seconds. Ticking away the time until the newly evolved Jason Phoenix’s match with Kid Flanagan. Jason Phoenix is seen sitting in front of the fire place, blazing with a powerful flame. The dusty, smudged Ace of Diamonds card sits next to him on the floor. The clock slowly tics behind him.
Tic Tic.
Ha, they say third times a charm; and I guess that’s becoming my own personal motto. Three times, this is the third time I have lost to Josh Eagles. I just…I just can’t seem to beat him. And now he is the Valiant Champion; the man that everyone is supposed to fear and respect and never expect to defeat. I have changed a lot over my time with Pride, but one thing has not changed: my drive to succeed. I have always been a strong competitor and stronger fighter, but I have never cared much about winning, just the battle itself. But now, I have this thrill of competition running through my veins; a thrill to fight, but also the thrill of victory. One day, I will defeat that man. One day, the Phoenix will destroy the Eagle.
Tic Tic Tic Tic.
But that is far in my future. Today, I worry about my next opponent: Kid Flanagan. I have faced this man once before, but that was in a ring with 6 other men, and it was only my second match in the Pride arena. I have learned a lot since then and have grown substantially. Back then I was just a kid playing in a big circle with 7 other guys trying to stay alive; but now, I can stand my own. I am ready to fight this man. I am ready to defeat him.
Tic Tic Tic Tic Tic. Jason’s neck twinges a bit at the sound. The fire crackles. Jason pulls his trusted old zippo out of his pocket.
My friend. You have kept me safe, kept me warm through these challenging times. Every victory, every loss, you’ve been by my side. I just wish I could make you bigger, make you stronger. You are always trapped, sustained within a small metal box or over a pitiful pile of sticks and twigs. I want to let you out, free you, see what you can truly do. You have only teased me with your power, but I want more. I want to feed you. We have always worked so close together, but I want more. I want you to be larger than life, engulfing everything in your path.
Tic Tic Tic Tic Tic.
I want you to-
Tic Tic Tic. Phoenix gets distracted.
I want you to be-
Tic Tic Tic Tic. Interrupting again, starting to get on his nerves.
I want-
TIC TIC TIC TIC TIC TIC. Phoenix has had it. He stands up, in an angry rage, rips the clock of the wall and throws it forcefully into the fire place, smashing it against the back wall, destroying the time piece. Silence.
Now, where was I-
Tic Tic Tic Tic Tic TIC TIC TIC TIC. Phoenix looks around the room frantically, furious and fearful that the source of the noise that he has destroyed has returned. Enraged, he reaches into the fire and pulls out the pieces of the shattered clock, badly burning his hands in the process. Screaming with rage and pain, he begins to stamp on the clock pieces while screaming “Get Out of my Head!” repeatedly. When the mocking noise finally ends he falls to his knees on the scorched carpet, realizing the searing pain on his hands. He screams into the air, and begins to breathe very heavily. Through all of the commotion the Ace of Diamonds has been burned by embers, scorching the card, creating rough edges. Unknowing what to do about his burned hands; he sits on the ground, watching the scars and blisters form. His fiery friend has betrayed him.
Tic Tic Tic. A destroyed Jason Phoenix sits on the ground in great pain, letting out a weak final, “Get out of my head” before crumbling to the ground.
