Lukas Reinhardt paused for a moment, watching as the last bit of his breath faded into the cold German night. His quest to fulfill some ancient prophecy had been more of a personal burden than his men had realized. The trips to find the two warriors had forced Lukas to sacrifice seeing the birth of his own daughter, Kaja. His long trek home from the Kriegzimmer had provided Lukas the time to practice his speech to his wife, explaining his absence at such a vital point in their lives together. After the forty-five minutes of walking, Lukas Reinhardt was still unable to put his thoughts into coherent words. He turned the doorknob, expecting to enter a darkened living room. Much to his surprise, he was immediately greeted by the sight of his wife, Malene, holding the baby Kaja in her lap.
Malene’s voice was sweetly singing a song to her child. She turned her head to face the doorway, where Lukas Reinhardt was standing. Malene’s eyes brightened immediately upon seeing her husband. She stroked baby Kaja’s hair lightly and pointed her finger towards the doorway. In a hushed voice, Malene cooed, “Do you see that man, Kaja? That’s your father.” The wife smiled proudly. “Lukas, isn’t she beautiful?”
Lukas blinked, his eyes adjusting to the room’s lighting. Closing the door behind him, he slowly walked over to where his wife sat. For the first time, he stared down into the eyes of his daughter.
As the baby Kaja returned his glare, a bullet pierced through the window in the Reinhardt house and struck her father between his eyes. The Krieg commander fell over with a thud...
And Kaja awoke with a gasp...

Kaja's blonde hair was matted and sticking to her face, which was cold with a fearful sweat. Despite the years since the incident with her father, should had never been able to stop the nightmares. They all started as a pleasant memory, but manifested into her father's death. Kaja rose from her bed and looked out the window into the night sky.
"I miss you, father..." she mumbled, barely audible despite the room being silent. Kaja closed her eyes and said a prayer for her father and for herself. Despite her success, she missed her homeland. Unlike the Maschinen, she was not able to focus on the task at hand without distraction...
And so the Krieg was going to win and Kaja would continue her assimilation and search for peace.
