Gore, blood, and brain matter splatter in an animated fashion across the screen in front of me as my loaded Shotgun reduced the almost fleshless skull of another Zombie in front of me to a headless and dead creature of the night. I continued to run my way through the open courtyard mindful of my surroundings trying to ignore the clicking of my controller as I quickly turned left to right and let the sound of the shotgun and the graphics of the game I was playing fill my mind. I had been playing for the past four hours, it had been a long time since a game had caught my attention like this. But this was everything you could want from a Zombie Horror game. It had new and creative weapons that rivaled that of even Resident Evil: Code Veronica. It's graphics were almost life like and it was in 3D. It was a great new title for the PS3 and I was getting to Beta it.
It was exhilarating really. The horror and the surprise kept you on the edge of your seat, the game was dark and life like and the Zombies not your typical zombies. They were fast, they learned, the were George Remero type zombies and it really added to the effect of the game. It got my blood pumping like only being in a ring could and since I wasn't allowed to train this week as per the doctor I had to get my excitement somehow. Dru the Merc had really messed me up, it was a good match but I was brutalized in it, he was a monster and one I knew I'd be facing again in the future.
"GOD DARN IT!"
A little female zombie popped out of nowhere and started to munch on me and there was nothing I could do, I had lost again. The game was hard, but such was life.
"Tell me again why you are wasting your days playing Zombie Games?"
I turn around and am met by a smile from Jenny. She had refused to leave my side since the hospital incident, more so now that Sterling and Noble were having a full investigation launched into it because they couldn't have their champion be a drug addict. But now she was a temporary fixture here in my little room and it was a pleasant upgrade over Tala any day of the week.
"Jenny, this isn't just any zombie game. This is Zombie Hunter 2011 which is going to be the game of the year for Sony. It's got 3D, there is a motion plus gun system like Killzone 3, plus it's story is deep and emerging."
Jenny rolls her eyes and turns back to cutting up the veggies on the counter.
"So it has nothing to do that Josh Eagles is one of the unlockable characters you can play in it's online mode?"
It was true, I had been contacted for a product placement position as an unlockable character for online mode where you could actually use the Impact Asylum to take zombie heads clear off and it was pretty awesome but I wasn't going to let Jenny know that.
"No I just need something to pass the time until I am cleared to be in the ring again and they needed a beta tester."
Suddenly Jenny hits her own head and looks down.
"What's wrong?"
"I'm so sorry I totally forgot to tell you. Kurt Noble called and said he spoke with your doctors and they are giving you the all clear for the next Oblivion as long as it was in a normal match and providing you rest until then."
I was a little surprised, the doctors didn't seem to keen on letting me go and they were not impressed with the bribe I offered them to clear me so that I wouldn't be welching on my promise I made just one week later.
"Well that could have come earlier, I doubt Noble can get me a match on such short notice."
"No, he did get you a match. You are to face Aurelia Zombie at the next Oblivion."
Now I knew Jenny was just trying to mess with me. I mean she had been doing it all week, her own little forms of payback for making her my emergency contact without notice ... but this was going a little too far and obvious. I was playing a Zombie game during a week I had to face someone with the last name ZOMBIE? What are the odds ...
"Yup, sure I am and this week I'll just play this game for match research."
Jenny puts down the knife and walks over to stand in front of the T.V
"You know that Zombie is a real person right?"
"Jenny I know every single wrestler in the Kingdom and I am very well aware that Zombie is a real person, it would be hard to miss the only female competitor on the roster."
I watch as the color seems to drain from Jenny's face.
"Are you okay Jenny?"
"Zombie ... is a girl? You are facing a girl and you don't have an issue with that?"
Alright Jenny was not that good of an actor so I guess the truth was that I truly was stepping into the ring with Zombie. I was a little surprised to be honest I figured I would run into her one day, but not quite this soon.
"So I guess you aren't lying about me having a match?"
Jenny simply shakes her head no the color still draining from her face.
"Then no I don't have an issue with stepping into the ring and having a match with a woman."
"But ... how? You nearly funded an entire Violence Against Woman Center and your very vocal about woman abuse yet you can step into the ring and beat one yourself?"
"NoI can step into the ring and have a match against a woman. I don't condone violence towards woman in an everyday setting, more so to woman who can't protect themselves. I think next to rape and child molestation it is the most sick and cowardly think a human being can do. But this is different. Zombie has trained and she has dedicated herself to the pursuit of the ring and the art of wrestling. I would be insulting her and everything she has worked for by basing a match on her gender or size or anything. She should be treated like a normal opponent."
Jenny sits down and seems to be in a little bit of disbelief and I couldn't blame her. I didn't like the idea of having to physically hurt a woman in order to win a match, but I was not going to disrespect her and her dreams based on her gender.
"Jenny, go back and watch this girl wrestle. She has demolished some very could competition and has proven she is more then capable of holding her own in the ring and likely just as capable of beating me. I've watched as most of the people she comes up against get hung up on her gender and either can't face her because of it or think she is a push over because of it. I look at the only thing that counts in every person I step into the ring with, their skill and their motivation."
"But doesn't it feel wrong?"
"Sure it does, I am not going to say I am comfortable with it, but it's part of the job. For Zombie this is a big chance to make an impact and a statement not only for herself but for females. What if she stepped into the ring and beat the Valiant Champion? That would elevate her career to the next level, to heights that we've never seen a female go in wrestling before. I honestly have nothing but respect for someone who steps into a 'mans' world and doesn't back down. She fights for something she believes in and she has backed up everything as she's done it."
Zombie was an impressive wrestler and had a lot of skills and she was also quite attractive. I wasn't dumb enough to think that she didn't playoff the fact she was a woman just a little to get the advantage but I wasn't going to be hung up on that.
"But you are just hands down more powerful then her, you could crush her."
"And Dru the Merc was clearly bigger then me and could crush me but that didn't make me back down."
"And in the end you got crushed and are currently on medical restrictions."
"You know what that maybe true but I never gave up, for every ounce of fight he brought to me I brought that much back to him and I expect that Zombie will do the same. She'll utilize her speed and likely the fact she thinks I won't hurt her, which I don't want to in anyway but I will wrestler her. Every person has the right to step into the ring and fight for what they believe in and every person I step into the ring with I need to leave my everything out there. I am champion for a reason and I want to please the fans.
I want her to have the chance to make her statement and advance her career. I know I say all the time that everyone tries to use me to do that and I won't let them and I mean that ... but I mean I won't let them without a fight. I am honored and humbled that many people who step into the ring against me know what a win can do for their career. I've built my career on what I do in that ring and bringing my A game so this week won't be any different."
"I still think it's wrong."
I smiled and leaned back a little. In this day and age there was no arguing with people who had their mind set in one way, but I believed in Zombie being in the Kingdom and I thought she was a great addition to the roster and a great story to watch.
"People like it. They may not seem like they do, but they do. Over the years I've watched and been apart of wrestling I've watched cripples, handicapped people, mental patients, woman, midgets ... any form of 'underdog' that you could think of that could step into this world and compete do just that. The Kingdom is a place for dreams and for entertainment and the fans love an underdog, the love a great story. Do I think Zombie IS an underdog? No I'd be foolish to think otherwise, she's got skill and compete and is going to bring it to me ... but most will perceive her as an underdog."
"And you think the fans will cheer it and love it?"
"Why wouldn't they? Think about it, a tiny woman enters a world dominated by the athletic male. She steps up to the plate and takes down the first pig that treats her worse because of her gender! She strings together some wins and then leaves her mark trying to take out the Valiant Champion, trying to prove that she can go with the best of them. Mark my words the fans will cheer and Zombie will get the chance to wear gold in this company because it would put people in the seats and bring in a whole new fan base. Zombie is a revolution waiting to happen for the Kingdom and I won't insult that honor or that revolution by basing my compete level off of gender."
Jenny is still shaking her head and she doesn't look comfortable at all and I still couldn't blame her. She didn't like the fact I was going to wrestle Zombie at all.
"The world has changed. Look at games, look at fighters and shooters. There is no basis built off of gender anymore, woman stand equal to men in this world. A woman can be given a gun and go to war and die then she can step into the ring and have the right to fight despite her gender. Trust me when I say a woman can kick a mans ass and they have the right to."
"Well you know I can't root for you in this match then ..."
"I never expected anything less Jenny. I am looking forward to it though, it's been a truly long time since an unknown and unexpected challenge was thrown in my direction and I want to meet that challenge and come out victorious."
"Well I think Zombie will likely beat you even worse the Dru the Merc did."
Now I laughed, I knew she wasn't comfortable with it but this was her way of saying I'll support you anyway. Sometimes I wondered how I had the right to be surrounded by such good people.
"Well even if she does then I'll just get back up and compete the next week. The Kingdom is my everything and I won't stop coming until I stop drawing breathe ... no matter who the opponent."
"And hopefully the fans will love you even more for it."
"As long as I've given it everything and they walk away happy then I'll be content if they cheer me or boo me ... though I'd prefer the cheers."
"Just play your game you goof."
And so Jenny walked away and I continued to play my Zombie Hunter 2011 game just waiting till I fight the real Zombie. The irony would be both would be finished at the end of an Impact Asylum and I would be looking on towards my next challenge, my next step, and my next chapter.
It was exhilarating really. The horror and the surprise kept you on the edge of your seat, the game was dark and life like and the Zombies not your typical zombies.
