The scene opens to find Luke Haven sitting in a cold metal chair in front of a lit fire place wearing ripped jeans and a dark t shirt. The fire has obviously been burning for quite some time. There is soot and ash covering the hearth, and a slight scent of smoke in the air. Luke sits silently, shuffling a tattered deck of cards. He stares intently into the raging flame, not looking away for a second.
“Opportunity opportunity opportunity; that’s all I’ve heard since I got to Pride. Sterling says he wants to help me out, make me stronger, but he’s just trying to get me out. His ‘opportunities’ are just schemes to get me to leave the Kingdom. And then last week, he threatens to fire me? He said if I don’t beat the King himself that I get kicked out. So we fought in an epic duel between the King and the Jester. And seeing as I have a match in a few days, the outcome is obvious. The Jester beat the King.”
Luke continues to shuffle the cards. They flow like water through his hands, interlocking together seamlessly. Suddenly, he takes the top card off of the deck and throws it into the fire. A small smile comes across his face as the card is engulfed in flames, slowly wrinkling into a black piece of ash.
“Anything can give fuel to the fire, even something as small and as insignificant as a playing card. It grows stronger with each addition.”
He throws another card into the fire.
“Fire feeds on the energy it is given. Every card I add is just more fuel for the fire to take and spit back out at ten-fold the power. And I have done the same thing. Every opponent the King has thrown at me, I’ve taken, and defeated while still getting stronger.”
He throws a few more cards into the fire, his eyes glowing with the sheer heat in front of him.
“Every past opponent I’ve been given has been more fuel added to my fire. I have become much stronger over the last month or so. I’m no longer that kid from the streets. I even beat the King of Spades himself.”
Luke takes the king of spades playing card from the deck and throws it into the fire, giving a slight grin.
“And here we have my next two opponents,”
Luke takes the Jack of Clubs and Jack of Hearts out of the deck.
“The noble Jack of Clubs, Josh Eagles, and the gallant Jack of Hearts, Stephen Callaway. These two are at the top of the deck, only lower than the king himself. They will be tough competition, but I can beat them. This is my shot at the title, the highest honor in all of Pride, and I will not let that slip through my claws without a fight.”
Luke throws the Jack of Clubs and Jack of Hearts into the fire. The fire shoots out sparks from the increased fuel, causing Luke to give out a slight laugh. Luke begins to speak in a manic fury, standing up and almost pacing back and forth in front of the fire.
“This title will be mine! I have taken everything that King Sterling has thrown at me and given it right back! This is my time to shine, my time to burn!”
Luke throws the rest of the cards into the fire with a large pitch, holding on to just two. The fire explodes from the new addition of kindling, forcing Luke to give off a tremendous cackle into the air. He slowly ends his laughing fit, looking into his hands, down at the only two cards left. He begins to deliberate, still speaking in his manic, cynical tone.
“Two left. The Joker, and the Ace of Diamonds. What to choose what to choose. Either be the Kings fool for the rest of my life, or take charge and become more powerful than the King, more powerful than them all!”
Luke looks at the two cards, the Ace in his left hand, the Joker in his right. He stares fixedly for a minute. The only sound is Luke’s heavy breathing and the crackling of the fire he has formed. Suddenly, Luke chucks the Joker card into the roaring fire.
“Ha, what a choice! Me, the Ace of Diamonds? The choice was obvious wasn't it? I am the Ace of Diamonds. I, am the Crimson Knight.”
The scene closes with Luke Haven clutching on to the Ace of Diamonds playing card, staring into the graveyard of cards he has created.
