Friendship, the bonds are stronger than bone and their ability to support the burdens of others are unmatched by any other foundation. Yet they fade as the years go by, time and distance wearing it away like exposed iron, weakening the bonds as it rusts. Like a car though, when one rusts away, a new one can be found, but unlike the car, money simply won’t do. For this reason, true friends are invaluable, worth more than a house, a luxury car, even a knockout blonde. The greatest of friendships are truly irreplaceable.
With the new car smell still lingers in the Cookesville Community Center, with less than two hours to go before Kingdom of Pride makes it’s return to the airwaves. Backstage, the air is alive with frenetic energy, the final push towards bell time sending a number of people scurrying about, making sure that everything as it should be. For the first time this group is working together, new bonds of friendship being formed, getting used to the idiosyncrasies of other people. Yet amongst the constant shuffle, two people stand out for their lack of activity, leaned up against a wall conversing amongst one another.
Chris - “This is going to be something big Ruford, I can feel it in my bones.”
Turning to Ruford, the burly black janitor, Chris Hart smiles heartily. The bond they had forged previously was strong, so strong in fact that as part of signing his contract, Ruford was gainfully employed to once again, sweep the halls of a wrestling promotion. Ruford however carries the same unmoving, neutral expression.
Ruford - “Pink Drink, I really don’ care. You and Nazi Boy can do whatever you want, I’ll sweep, same as before.”
Chris - “You know Ruford, that always bugged me, someone your size sweeping the ring instead of wrestling in it. You should ask Kurt too …”
Ruford - “I told both Nazi Boy and Cheerio that I’ll fight when I want to fight, not when some cracker jack tells me too. Besides, I go out there in the middle of Tennessee unprotected. The hoods would be on me like hyenas on a wounded antelope.”
Chris - “I’d have your back Ruford, that’s a promise.”
Ruford - “Yeah, then you’d end up in the tree right next to me. Trust me Pink Drink, I’m made for sweepin’, you’re made for ‘rasslin’. Now let’s just leave it as that.”
Ruford looks at Chris, his glare hardening slightly as Chris looks up, knowing not to push the subject any further and draw the ire of the leviathan Ruford. Looking past him for a moment, he smiles as Alex Avice has finally cornered Kurt Noble who appears to be quite frazzled. He tries to excuse himself but Alex won’t be denied, for three days he has tried to get the man backing Kingdom of Pride and former Heavyweight Champion, to offer his thoughts on the rebirth of the Kingdom with little success. Turning back to Ruford, Chris smiles slightly as without saying a word, Ruford heads towards Noble and eventually just barrels him away from Avice, who looks on stunned at the janitor doing this to the man who signs his pay checks.
With a slight laugh Chris turns around and heads back towards the communal locker room. Reaching it, he heaves a slight sigh before placing his hand on it. Before he can push however, he hears his name and turns around, seeing Alex Avice running down the hall chasing after him.
Alex - “Chris, I was wondering if I could get an interview with you.”
Chris sighs slightly as he turns around, instantly contemplating what to do. As Alex finally pulls up to him, panting slightly Chris throws his head back once before looking at Avice.
Chris - “What do you want to interview me about?”
Alex stares at Chris for a moment, paused by the question.
Alex - “What do you mean?”
Chris - “What do you want to interview me about? If it’s about wrestling, fine, I think I have a level of expertise in that subject that I could be informative. If you want to ask me about politics and why Nick Clegg and President Obama are absolute morons I could probably give you my opinion as well. That being said, I …”
Alex - “I want to talk to you about wrestling.”
Chris - “So now you want to talk to me about wrestling, not interview me.”
Alex - “No, I want to interview you about wrestling.”
Chris - “Then why didn’t you say that?”
Chris chuckles to himself as Alex begins to grow flustered with Hart. With time running out before the show he had no time to waste, and yet here he was, debating semantics with a man many consider the favorite to win the Valiant Championship. Seeing the effects his slight mocking had on Alex, Chris steps forwards, the heels on his boots clacking against the concrete floor and placing his arm around his shoulder.
Chris - “I’ll give you your interview, just take it easy, alright?”
Alex - “Alright.”
Chris smiles as Avice shakes his head, not used to his jestful nature. The two walk back from whence they came, heading towards the ring area. Eventually they stop in front of the blue Kingdom of Pride banner, the camera already set up to record the interview. Chris smiles and nods his head as they begin to roll.
Alex - “Ladies and gentleman, we are less than an hour and a half away from the rebirth of Kingdom of Pride and I for one can’t wait. At this moment I am joined by Chris Hart who tonight will take on Rage Rodriguez inside the squared circle. Now Chris, before we get in to your match, what does it mean to get to compete here in Kingdom of Pride?”
Chris - “There’s been a lot of great wrestlers who have stepped through these doors Alex, a lot of names that people around the world now recognize truly got their start here in the Kingdom, so it means a lot Alex. There’s a rich history of wrestling Tennessee and getting a chance to add to that means a lot.”
Alex - “It all starts tonight with the first show where you’ll take on Rage Rodriguez in a Beat the Clock Challenge with five other men to determine the entrance order in the Gauntlet match for the Valiant Championship at Return of the Kingdom. Rage has been slightly outspoken in the run up to this match, saying your merely going to be an example of what he has in store for Kingdom of Pride. Care to rebut that?”
Chris - “If Rage Rodriguez wants to think that Alex, that’s fine. I have no problem with him mistaking his delusions for fantasy. He can try and get me riled up, can try and demean me in front of the great fans of Tennessee but that’s his prerogative. All I’m going to do is go out there and wrestle, and do what I do best. I’m supremely confident Alex that when push comes to shove, when we step into the ring where it really counts, I’m going to be the better man this evening and in the future.”
Alex - “Rage commented that he’s going to compete by his own rules this evening, that he was going to ‘break your neck’. How does that make you feel?
Chris - “It’s the same thing as him saying that I was going to be an example Alex. He can try to do all these things but he’s not going to. He’s mad and he’s delusional and I trust that the people of Tennessee can see that. I listened to what he had to say and no one cares about him being ‘banned from the EUW’ because this is Kingdom of Pride. They don’t care about a lack of creativity because that’s not what they pay to see. They come to see wrestling matches, the best in the business executing their craft. They don’t care about someone saying they’re going to break someone’s neck because they know the likelihood of that is slim to none.”
Alex - “Rage also called himself ‘the most controversial figure of professional wrestling.’ As few as six months ago, you likely could have claimed that title. What do you have to say about that?”
Chris - “Nothing.”
Alex - “I’m sorry?”
Chris - “If Rage wants that title, he can have it. As for me, I’m just going to wrestle.”
Chris shoots Alex a glare, telling him to discontinue the line of questioning. Alex, despite his lack of familiarity with Chris gets the message and moves along.
Alex - “Going back to Rage Rodriguez, he finished off by saying that he’ll leave the ring covered in your blood, tears and broken dreams.”
Chris - “Yeah, he did, but not if I have anything to say about that. Everything Rage said was, I’m going to beat Chris Hart, I hate EUW, I’m going to beat Chris Hart, I hate EUW, I’m going to kill Chris Hart, oh, and did you know, I hate EUW. So instead of continuing on, this circular line of questioning, why don’t I just finish this off.”
Alex shrugs his shoulders before passing off the microphone.
Chris - “Rage, you want to know why EUW got rid of you? It’s because no one cared. You adopted this controversial moniker, figuring that it would get people interested in you, for better of for worse but it didn’t. All it did was make people think you’re just a sad little man, with too much time on his hands. You want to say you’ll break my neck, ruin my dreams, fine, but you’ve done nothing to prove that you can do that in the ring. You want to talk about creativity and how EUW had the lack of it? You by and far contributed to that the most with the same bull shit every week.
But that’s not here and now Rage, what is, is our match. Kingdom of Prides first show back. You said I’m going to be a stepping stone, but let me tell you a little secret rage, I’m nobodies stepping stone. I’m that itch in the small of your back that you just can’t scratch, I’m a cockroach who you just can’t kill, I’m not going to back down because Rage Rodriguez says he’s going to commit gruesome murder in the ring … and be paid for it.
You’ve got a job, go out there tonight and do it, I’ll do mine. If you want to shoot, we can shoot. We’ll go ten paces and draw, and you know, I’m pretty confident I’ll win there. This isn’t my first rodeo, cowboy. You can dig the spurs in all you want, but I’m going to buck you off before you hit eight seconds. You want to prove yourself to Kingdom of Pride, to Tennessee and to Kurt Noble, beat me in the ring. Beat a man who everyone considers the top threat to take home the Valiant Championship.
I’ll be ready Rage and I pray to the Lord Almighty that you are too. Otherwise it’s going to be the slaughter you predicted, but you’re going to be the lamb. There’s not going be an Angel of the Lord that comes down and saves you from the dagger Isaac. Instead, it’s going to be an act from the wrestling Gods, removing the blight you’ve been on the wrestling world Rage.”
With that, Chris walks away, shaking his head as Alex turns back to the camera.
Alex - “Chris Hart, ladies and gentleman.”
With that, the camera cuts away.
