I could make up excuses and I could go on for hours about how I was screwed out of my chance at becoming the first ever Valiant Champion in the KoP, but the facts were that anyway I looked at it I had lost. No amount of training could have made me ready for the actions of one Christian Kane on that night, nothing could have made me think that he would be childish and a sore loser. But he in fact was and I suffered for it, but that didn't mean I was down and out. I was lucky in the fact that Chris Hart had won the championship, it truly made me happy. He was a worthy champion and after seeing the tape and watching how hard he had protected me I knew without a doubt I had no greater friend in all the world of wrestling outside of possibly Flap.
No, for me this was a chance an opportunity that I was going to take a hold of. Christian Kane had been ranting that he was going to be the first champion, that as a KoP original that he deserved the belt more then anyone. Now after attacking me at Return of the Kingdom I was booked in a one on one match against him and I was going to be able to demonstrate one very important thing to him ... this was a new Kingdom. The KoP had returned and it was building itself anew, building itself from scratch. Things were changing and I wanted to be the forefront of that change. The fans were my number one priority, the people getting a show and being respected. Tonight I was going to beat the person who treated them the worse, a person who had no respect for humanity. Tonight I was going to beat Christian Kane and I was going to secure my place as the number one contender for the Valiant Championship.
The scene opens and unlike what we have been used to in anything involving Josh Eagles we are in fact not at Eagles Enterprises or in an office of any sort. Instead we see Josh wearing what might be mistaken as casual attire, if it weren't for the shorts he was wearing being dress shorts and the shirt a very fine silk button up, though it was short sleeved and the top two buttons were not done up. Beside him Katie Chang looks stunning as always, wearing a slightly shorter then business type skirt and a match silk shirt that matches Josh even buttoned the same.
They were sitting in a park, Josh propped up on a picnic table and Katie scribbling numbers into a book sitting on the bench instead. All around them families were sprawled playing different activities, visiting multiple benches were a vast amount of food was set out, and looking to have a good time. Slightly off center and to the distance we can see E.E. Employee Appreciation Day. It seems this was a company function for Eagles Enterprises. Katie takes a moment and looks up from her work looking around and smiling.
"This was a really good idea Josh, I think maybe people might finally begin to see that you aren't such a jerk like you were before."
Josh looks down from looking up at the sun and we can see his sunglasses and a large head wrap still on his head, he gives Katie a mocking thank you smile.
"Well if that's what happens then I am sure glad. I just wish you'd put down the work for once and join in the fun."
"I wish it were possible, but with you shutting down the office for three days and flying everyone and their families out here it's not really possible. We have a couple of big clients that cases need to be closed and worked and we have basically a skeleton crew of people you are paying overtime to crunch numbers and do paper work to left behind. Plus you really have been no help this week."
Josh gives her a big white toothed smile and points at the wrap on his head.
"I am a wounded bird Katie, I just can't get my mind thinking."
"What happened to 'I'll be fine getting hurt like this is all part of the job'?"
"Oh well that is still true. Idiots like Christian Kane getting peeved off because they aren't very good inside the ring and taking things into their own hands is part of the job ... BUT that doesn't mean I am not going to milk it for all that it's worth."
Katie sighs and suddenly she looks very uncomfortable.
"What's wrong Katie?"
"It's this whole Kane match you have this week, it doesn't sit well with me. You are trying to send out a positive message and revenge doesn't seem to quite send that to me."
"Well you would be mistaken in thinking this is revenge. Sterling and Noble are the ones who booked this match, it had nothing to do with me. They saw a chance to market a great match and they took it, really people are going to want to see me have the chance to face Kane one on one after what he did to me, it will sell tickets. I am not out to get any kind of revenge against Kane, I've ran into his type 1,000 times before this and I'll run into his type a ton more. He is a sore loser, he can't stand not being in the spotlight, the center of attention. He is a typical spoiled kid school yard bully and the best way to deal with them is to stand up to them and not take their crap. Kane isn't the big dog in his own backyard anymore like he seems to think."
Katie looks down at the papers in front of her and starts tapping the pen on the table chewing on her lip obviously thinking.
"I just, well don't you think the guy is a little off his rocker and I think he might hurt you."
"Off his rocker? Don't let the act fool you, there is nothing sadistic or even scary about SEEEE KAY! He treats woman like shit and trophies to make himself feel better, he talks big but he can barely ever back it up, he attacks you from behind because he is missing the balls and talent to beat you from the front. Kane is little more then an overrated joke as far as I am concerned and he is only OOOOOOO KAY in the ring. Actually he is only OOOOO KAY at anything that he does."
Josh jumps up from the bench and stretches his arms behind him looking up at the bright clear sky once again. He looks to be much more limber then one would expect.
"You see the thing about me Katie is people watch me closer when they know that I am down, that I have been kicked and maybe looks like I am out because that is when I rise up and take it to a whole new level. I lost my first chance to become Valiant Champion and I instead gained a chance to make a statement, to build a legacy. We have a good champion in Hart and I am hoping to have the honor of facing him for that championship, to have him one on one and finally bury which one of us is the better man. But I also have a chance to show that the KoP is going in a new direction, upwards. I can beat Kane, I can make him realize that he is truly insignificant in this company and that he isn't scaring anyone. I even remember a time when I was under the mask as Tala where I made him nearly wet himself because he was on my hit list."
"And if he comes after you again?"
Josh simply shrugs and smiles at Katie.
"Born losers will be born losers. He likely might try and attack me, he may even try and recruit some help. If I was Kane knowing that he was going into that ring against me I'd try and come up with every scrap of help that I could find and that is the kind of guy Kane is. He won't face me in a fair fight if he can avoid it and I don't expect him to. So if he tries anything I will be ready. It's like I keep saying, I know his type and I expect some sort of trick to be up his sleeve."
Katie eyes Josh for a moment and clearly unsatisfied with the answer she turns back to the work in front of her and continues writing. After a moment she looks up and she looks around her.
"I think we look at the world in very different ways Josh and it maybe why I have troubles understanding your point of view sometimes. You see when I look around I see all of these people having fun and I know to you it seems like you are giving back, selfless in a sense. But to me even though we lost a lot of money with this I see moral raising, people wanting to work harder and the Eagles name holding more weight and in a non scary way that may bring in more customers. In the end I see this as a financial move and a smart one. Stepping into the ring with Kane, I don't see the upside. Nobody will dispute you as one of the best, you have nothing to prove, and it seems like petty revenge that could get you hurt."
"So we need to maybe change your outlook on it a little. You see in order to increase your name, image, and value to the most it can be you have to beat people worth beating. While both you and I may not see Kane as someone truly worth taking the time to beat in fact he is. You see Kane is the most hated person in the KoP which sets up what the fans love to see Good Guy vs Bad Guy and a great bad guy can put fans in the seats. It's smart booking ... someone like myself gets cheers, gets fans behind them, and they all want to see me beat Kane. Thus my stock rises, my merchandise sells, tickets sell, management is happy and they reward me. What do I get? Main market matches, title shots, the best opponents. What does that result in? More money, bigger bonuses, more merchandise sold. So if you need to look at it in a different way, there you are."
Now Katie seems to be truly pondering the upside of the match as Josh chuckles to himself, she truly was a business woman through and through. If Josh could get her thinking in the right way she could be an excellent manager and make him a lot of money... if he actually cared about the money anyway.
"I guess you are right beating Kane is the OOOO KAY thing to do."
"Don't do that, it just doesn't sound right coming from you, leave the jokes to me. Speaking of jokes I have something else I want you to do."
"Name it."
"I need you to draw up a contract for Flap Benevolance, or Hart or whatever he is going by now."
Now Katie looks truly worried as she should be being she saw the state Josh was in last time he was with Flap.
"Why would I be doing that and what the hell for?"
"You are doing it because the last time Flap trained me I felt alive, I felt a different side of me that I'd never felt before. I was truly ready for that gauntlet match and I think with some more help Flap can bring me to the next level. He knows me, he knows my weakness and what I need to work on and in his own mentally retarted way he is a wrestling genius. I think it would be profitable for both parties to continue to work together. Plus if I can recruit Flap into the KoP slowly I could land a very good signing for the company and quite possibly a tag team partner later down the line. Flap and I have had a lot of success in that area."
Katie still looks unsure but Josh is giving her a look of steely resolution.
"Fine, I think it's a bad idea but I won't argue. What kinda terms are we looking at?"
"Offer him $500 a week with match bonuses. He will receive an extra $200 for every match that I win, $400 if it is a Supercard match-up. If I win a championship he will receive an extra $1000 bonus. So he should be able to earn $3,000 a month on a decent month. $4,000 if I have a really great month."
"How long are we talking here?"
"Let's do 3 months and give him a $500 sign on bonus as well as some extra insentive. If I lose three straight matches though his contract is terminated."
Katie jots everything Josh says down and goes over it looking satisfied.
"One more thing. Get out there and mingle and have fun before you turn into Mr. Scrooge."
Josh smiles and shews Katie away and after a moment she complies and goes to join everyone at the food table and Josh sits down going over the paperwork she was doing. None of it was for Eagles Enterprises, all of it was research into merchandise sales for him and how to make them better. She truly was burning the midnight oil.
"I was making a lot of choices and a lot of changes. I knew I was going to beat Kane this week, I had his number and I was going to be ready for anything he through at me. I wanted to show the world not to be scared or worried by his boasts he was all talk and feathers nothing that really could hurt you even though the pounding headache I had spoke otherwise. But other choices were going to shape the outcome of this career of mine, the choice to hire Flap on as a trainer was going to be a large on. Wrestling was about taking risks and living on the edge, I was ready to take those risks and I was ready to reap their rewards."
