The more I thought about it, the more I could see it was critical that the Kingdom of Pride has true leaders in it's early stages. The federation stood on a rocky set of tilts with the way people were fighting and going at each others throats. Adam Abel had managed to upset the balance of things early on and they needed to be fixed and I had to figure out how. Well I had to add that to my long list of things that I needed to do. Some days I questioned why I even bothered doing it. I mean it was easy enough for me to run E.E and live more then comfortably for the rest of my natural life, but the facts were I didn't. Most of the time I tended to ignore the company that gave me more then my humble beginnings. I chose to fight, sweat, pain, and blood every week for a cause very few people understood or believed.
The common theory was I needed the glory and the power because people truly believed that was all there was to Josh Eagles, I was an open book easy to read. No matter what I did I couldn't prove them wrong in their own minds, they all watched and waited, wanting to see if I would 'convert' back to my old self. The truth was though, I loved the roar of the crowd, I loved people chanting my name, and I loved making a difference in someones life. With Eagles Enterprises nine times out of ten the deals I made would make some peoples lives great and some peoples lives worse. I was having a direct impact and it wasn't always positive.
When I stepped into the ring, when I gave it my all and left everything I had out there for at least a short period of time I was making people happy. I was giving them home and driving the issues they had with their own life out of their mind and allowing them to be absorbed in the sport, the drama. I think that is why I do what I do and I think that is why I was taking a lot of things personally these days. I mean yeah sure Kane and Abel breaking my skull with a steel chair was a little bit personal. I also felt it was personal the way Chris Strike had taken to walking around saying he was going to take the Kingdom for his own. A Kingdom was to be earned and the arrogance of Strike was beginning to agitate me and I didn't see where he was brash enough to come off with it. But alas, I knew that was the business.
The scene opened in a very bizarre place for Josh Eagles to be observed. Today we found ourselves in a restraunt and not the restraunt of a multi million dollar international star, but your basic above the average candle light diner with a $30 steak. It was a nice setting to be honest, a closed off booth made of a nice dark brown wood, glass plated candles lit the table from the table and a chandelier above. The dress code must have been a little above average as well as Josh was wearing dress pants and a nice dress shirt and his companion looked stunning in a half leg cut, slightly low swooping midnight black dress and her hair done up in a bun. To what would be many people surprises the woman sitting across from Josh was none other then Katie Chang and she looked slightly uncomfortable about being there.
"What's wrong Katie? Normally I can't get you to stop talking my ear off but tonight you seem rather quiet."
Katie flushes a little bit and takes a sip of the red dinner wine she had in front of her and plays with the pasta on her plate.
"It just feels weird being out with you like this, with no clients or anything like that."
"Like what? I told you, I don't know anyone in this city and I wanted to have a nice night and I think you deserve a break and a decent meal and so I wanted you to come with. I mean I am sorry it isn't the five star places we take clients sometimes, but the food here is great and the service is top notch."
"Oh no it's not that Josh. I really do like the food and happy you brought me out, I did need a break ... it's just we can't talk about work and I just don't know what to talk about."
Josh takes a sip of his own wine before shoveling a piece of steak into his mouth and taking a moment to chew, savor, and swallow before looking more directly at Katie wondering.
"You've worked for me a long time Katie, as a secretary, someone running my company, and now a sudomanager and I don't really know much about you at all. Tell me some more about you, I'd like to know."
"Why? I mean it's nothing really special."
"I want to know if it's special or not. You've done a lot for me, you've supported me and shown me great dedication and I want to know what in your life has inspired someone as great as you, someone I can always count on?"
Katie blushes deeply, her normally tanned cheeks become spotted with color as she looks down at the table and smiles a little more to herself then Josh.
"My parents left Japan before I was born to head to Canada. I was born there in Toronto, my dad was a decently successful accountant and my mother was a teacher. Not a school teacher, but she taught Japanese, Piano, and Art to some of the richer families who could afford her. She played the most wonderful music and drew the most amazing pictures."
Katie really seems to glow as she looks at Josh talking about her mother's art.
"You must have her show me sometime. I admire great works of art and a good piano piece."
Once again Katie's face looks towards the table, but now it is filled with sadness and she doesn't touch her wine or play with her noodles.
"Both my parents died in a house fire when I was nineteen."
"My apologies, I didn't know."
"Not many people do. I was already away at school, I went back to Japan to study business at a University in Tokyo. When I learned of my parents death I transfered back to Canada to finish my degree and well I don't know. After the funeral I just couldn't bring myself to go back. That is when I found you, well Eagles Enterprises anyway. It was when you were doing your open job fair and I needed money and I knew I could finish my courses online, so I applied and became your secretary. Worked out for the best."
Josh smiles and nods trying not to bring up such a touchy subject again.
"Well it most certainly did for me. I certainly never guessed I would have hired such a promising young woman."
"Actually you didn't. Your ex-wife did. She was tired of doing the job remember, so you told her to hire someone. That ended up being me. I don't even think she really did much interviewing, I was just the first person through the door."
Katie rolls her eyes and shrugs and Josh looks lost and doesn't know what to say. But luckily he is spared having to say anything as a middle aged man wearing a nice suit approaches the table with two children. A young girl maybe 12 years old and a little boy maybe 8 years old are with him.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your meal but my children here thought you were Josh Eagles and, well they wanted to come say hi and maybe get your autograph."
The man looked slightly embarassed at having butted in on the meal and clearly private conversation but Josh looked up at him and smiled and nodded then moved to the end of his bench and extended his hand to the two children who both took it and shook it.
"My name is Josh, what's yours?"
"Paige."
"Erich."
"Well Paige, Erich it is a pleasure to meet the both of you. You two watch wrestling do you?"
Erich nods but looks down obviously shy about meeting Josh.
"Erich has always been your fan, but I didn't start watching until lately. But I like it now, you're very cute."
The young girl Paige blushed and Josh laughed and smiled and put his finger to her nose and gave her a wink.
"Thank you Paige, you are a very pretty young girl yourself."
Paige now blushes deeply and shy's her face away from Josh as he reaches into his pockets and pulls out two pocket photos and a marker and signs them and hands them to each of the children whose eyes begin to glow with excitement. No doubt they couldn't wait to get to school and show their friends.
"Umm, would you mind if I had one too?"
Josh looks up at their father who isn't making direct eye contact but Josh smiles anyway and signs another one that the father takes mouthing thank you before turning his children around to walk away, but just before they walk away Erich turns back around.
"Josh! Are Adam Abel and Chris Strike going to hurt you this week, like they did before?"
"Erich that is not app..."
"No, no it's okay. Erich wrestling is a lot like stories that you here, it is full of bad guys, good guys, and guys who think they are good but turn out to be just side players who are bigger then what they think they are. But no matter who these guys are they always try and hurt the good guy, they try and make him lose what he loves. But what always happens in books?"
"The good guy wins!"
"That's right. No matter what the bad guy tries he ends up losing, falling into his own plot and in the end hurting only himself and losing everyone he loves. The other guy ends up being so obsessed with himself that he fails to see what is right in front of him and he misses out. It's what happens when they let their emotions be ruled by greed, ambition, and hate. The good guy keeps fighting though, fights for more then just himself and in the end they fight to the finish and the good guy wins. So what do you think is going to happen this week?"
"Simple, you are going to win! You have to win!"
"Thanks Paige, that means a lot to me. How about this? When I go out there I am going to dedicate this match to you and all of your friends and I am going to win for you and all of your friends as well."
Paige and Erich's faces light up and they nod as their Dad finally gets them away mouthing thank you and Josh turns back to his dinner smiling only to see Katie just staring at him with a smile on her face.
"How do you do that?"
"Do what? I'm good with kids if it was something I did there."
"You know very well you are walking into a match against someone who hates you and someone who isn't very fond of you. Both of them have beaten you, both of them want to make a statement. But here you sit looking confident and ready even knowing what is in front of you, knowing your body is going to be the cost of victory or failure."
"I truly believe the good guy always does win. I think the actions of Abel are going to catch up to him one of these days and he won't always catch me off guard. Strike is so absorbed in himself and his own skill that he has begun to believe far too much into his own hype. He truly thinks he is a god, he thinks that he is untouchable and those are the type of people that make mistakes. I am a patient man, I take my time and I play my cards, and I think this time I am going to score a royal flush."
Katie smiles and shakes her head.
"Unbelievable, that is what you are you know. Nothing phases you or gets to you at all does it?"
"Life is too short to let it get to you. Scars heal it's as simple as that. A couple of chair shots comes with the business and I am not going to be scared off by someone saying they can beat me, if that's all it took then I'd never win a match. Sure Chris Strike and Abel have beaten me before, but this is a different match on a different day. I simply have more to work for, more to gain, and I am more prepared for this. I won't lose because I have faith in myself and the way I do things. I won't lose because I can't afford to lose right now."
"But ..."
"There is nothing more to be said about it. All the words I could say to you won't mean anything. The only actions I have left are to do it in the ring, to let words stop being the direct meaning of everyone's life and show that I have fight and spirit. I'll show that tomorrow in the main event. Now we promised no business talk, so let's just eat and have a good night."
Katie smiles shaking her head and taking a sip of wine as they continue their dinner in peace forgetting the looming match hanging over Josh's head.
It was refreshing to remember that people liked you for the things that you did and sometimes just for being pretty. I took relief in that and it motivated me to continue to fight and do the right thing. I knew that I was in for the fight of my life, that it would be a fight to the finish, but I was ready. I wasn't going to back down and I wasn't going to lose. During the main event Josh Eagles was going to claim a victory and claim a prize, the prize that finally says I am not to be taken lightly.
The common theory was I needed the glory and the power because people truly believed that was all there was to Josh Eagles, I was an open book easy to read.
