A train speeds by. Fields and towns pass in a flash of colour. Inside, Missy sits watching something on her Ipod. Without taking her eyes away, she reaches into her bag and takes out a bottle of water. She opens it, takes a mouthful, returns the lid and places it back in her handbag.
Across from her, Stephen Callaway looks settled. He holds in his gloved hand a slightly battered copy of the Batman (1989) movie novelization. He reads his book quietly, occasionally he takes his eyes off the book to glance out the window at the passing colours.
He looks content. Missy doesn't like this so she says:[/i]
Missy
"The Krieg?"
Stephen looks up from his book at his wife before inserting a Batman bookmark and slotting the book into his coat pocket.
Stephen
"What about them?"
Missy
"You and Tommy Hargrove face them on Sunday."
Stephen
"The Apollo Creed Meinheimer don't worry me. Yes they're big fat bastards trained to feel no pain, but I have them sussed."
Missy looks at him with a disbelieving look before asking the one thing she knows she's going to regret asking.
Missy
"OK, genius, ammuse me. How do you have them sussed?"
Stephen
"It's a tag match right?"
Missy nods.
Stephen
"So all I have to do is tag Tommy in!"
Stephen looks at her expecting a round of applause at his brilliant plan. Instead she leans forward hitting her head on the table in front.
Missy
"I (hits her head on the table) don't (hits her head on the table) know (hits her head on the table) why (hits her head on the table) I (hits her head on the table) bother (hits her head on the table) with you (hits her head on the table)"
Stephen laughs[/color][/i]
Stephen
"You didn't believe that was my only plan did you? Roddy Piper used to say 'the bigger they are the harder they fall, just make sure they don't fall on you'. Sooner or later The Apollo Creed Meinheimer are going to fall. Tranquilizer dart or not. I've been working with my trainer on speed this week. All I need to do is move faster, hit hard, hit fast. If Tommy Hilfinger is worth his salt as a tag partner, he'll hit them with the hard moves, the submissions, and wear them down. Granted if he goes for a TTG, he'll probably kill himself but on the plus side the match'll end."
Missy
"So what's he like as a tag partner?"
Stephen
"Dammed if I know. I've left calls, texts and I think he has a twatter page. So far nothing. It's like dealing with Marcel Marceau. I'm hoping to catch him on Sunday before the match, talk strategy, talk, make sure we're on the same page."
Missy
"And if he's not?"
Stephen
"I don't need, nor want, to be friends with this guy. Truth be told I don't need any of them. It's just you and me against the world. All I need is him to work with me for the duration of the match. Once the bell rings at the end and I have my hand raised, he can walk to the back, talk with the animals or fight Linda McMahon for Governor if he wants to, I don't really care."
The train grinds to a halt and a garbled sound comes over the tannoy. Missy glances out of the window.
Missy
"We're here!"
They pick up their bags and cases and leave the train with Stephen complaining about how he could have finished the book if his wife hadn't started on about the Apollo Creed. The picture fades to black.
